Buying a placement is like hiring a partner — you only find out the problems after you’ve paid. A five-minute check before you commit saves you from a link that does nothing, or worse, one that hurts.
The checklist
Run every publisher through these before handing over content:
- Is it indexed? Search the site’s own domain (e.g.
site:example.com). If the homepage is the only result, the rest of the site isn’t being read by search engines. - Does it have real traffic beyond the homepage? Pick a few article URLs and check if they rank for anything. A publisher that only ranks for its own brand name has no audience to hand you.
- Is the link permanent and do-follow? Get both written down. “Always do-follow” and “will stay up” are different things from a contract that says “link is nofollow” or “removed after 90 days.”
- Can they show live samples? Ask for links to actual published placements on the exact domain, not a folder of screenshots. Then click them — dead or rel=‘nofollow’ links tell you everything.
- Who writes it? Native editorial quality shows immediately. Machine-translated filler reads like machine-translated filler, and it signals a publisher who doesn’t care about the page they’re renting you.
Red flags
- Nofollow or paid-disclosure not disclosed up front. If the publisher can’t say clearly whether a link is do-follow, assume it isn’t.
- A directory of same-topic posts all written in the same week — that’s a link farm, and it reads that way to Google.
- No real About / editorial / author pages. Anonymity is a signal.
- Prices that look too good. DR 50+ indexation, do-follow, permanent, and $30? It’s a lie or a scrape.
Why the middle matters
The reason the mid-tier (DR 40–55) is the sweet spot is that those publishers have real editorial teams, real archives, and enough authority to pass it on — without the cost or the queue of a flagship. The best buys are publishers whose authority was built over years, not bought.
PressInAsia publishes permanently across six established bilingual publishers — including hkese.net at Ahrefs DR 55 — with live URL and index confirmation on every placement. Ask for our rate sheet and samples.
